Responding to my own post -- it's fixed, took all day, and now I'm back in
shape.
The message to tech support was obviously routed somewhere, or to some
e-brain, and it fixed the problem, but it set gmail to download everything
from 7/7/05. If you're like me, that's thousands of posts! I had to
disable pop access and then re-active it in order for the whole thing to
work.
