First I'll say that I prefer portable applications. Makes it so much easier
when upgrading. I'm not sure what the true definition of "Portable
Application" means... but to me, it's something that will run without
installing it... even if it changes registry settings... an application that
can simply be copied to another PC and run just fine.

I recently tried to upgrade Win98SE to WinXPpro, but it wouldn't upgrade. I
had to perform a complete new install. Before installation, I ran Norton
Ghost to backup my entire hard drive. After formatting drive C and
installing WinXPpro, I was able to simply restore/extract the majority of
the applications (one at a time) from the Ghost image into a directory
called "Portable Applications". Most of them ran just fine. I did have
to re-configure some settings for each application (that were obviously
stored in the registry).

Now whenever I try new programs/applications... whether freeware or not...
I'll install it, copy it to "Portable Applications", uninstall it, reboot,
and see if it still runs. If it doesn't run, I'll just reinstall the
application.

If I should ever have to upgrade again down the road, I can simply copy the
entire "Portable Applications" folder to the new drive (along with the
start-menu shortcuts).
