Google adsense (https://www.google.com/adsense/) is one way to go, but
don't chose banners, let it display the ads. 500 impressions a day in
my experience, should yield about $2.50-5.00 a day.

Another way to go is Yahoo's Publisher Network
(http://publisher.yahoo.com/index.php) the ads are much less relevant
so you are providing much less of a service to your visitors.

Being less relevant, they get clicked on much less, maybe even a tenth
or twentieth as much or even more. However they pay per click
astronomically more, like 10 times more.

In the end you'll have to experiment, and think about how much you want
to annoy your visitors with ads, as they are usually annoying in any
form.

In a sense they go against the freeware ethic, but one supposes one has
to make a livelihood some way. Then again you can see freeware as a
gift, but if there are strings attached you pollute the spirit.

I don't know, I use them and feel blessed by the $6 a day I make, but
then again I do feel some compunctions as I'm not expressing the
freeware spirit in it's purest form. Also I may be profiting over the
work of others since my site is a directory of freeware. I'm not a
coder, but wish I were, and certainly have spent the same untold hours
on my sitte as coders have spent on their creations.

I appreciate freeware coders, and hope someday to have enough substance
to be freely generous to omit the ads. Right now as I have said before
here I'm deeply in credit card debt, so this stops my generosity, since
perhaps my time and creations are other peole's money. I don't know...
