Help on Columnizer Help, Please - and Lagniappe

de Don Kirkman 02/01/2008 01:43

As Roberto DeVincenzo said when he was disqualified from the 1968
Masters Tournament playoff for inadvertently signing an incorrect score
care, "What a stupid I am!"

I've groveled through Google, roamed freely through acfreeware archives,
and now come here to plead for mercy. Will someone please teach me the
ABCs of Columnizer? I've finally learned how to put data into the
program (but not sure if I'm doing it correctly), but after trying
several times to make the buttons do something with my text, I'm at the
point of giving up. Once I understand the Help file explanations* for
the buttons/icons I can begin to do the real work I have in mind, but
until then I'm stuck.

* My help file works, it just doesn't show me what steps to follow to
do what I want to get done.

Some of the questions I have:

< What is the correct/recommended way to load a file into Columnizer?
< Can I edit text in Columnizer or do I have to do it in the source
file?
< How do I set column widths or choose the number of columns?
< Can I have lines dividing columns for easier reading?
< After I select a button how do I enter (activate) the chosen
function?
< Is Columnizer supposed to automatically form columns based on the
column heads?
< Or do I skip the column heads and use only the data that are supposed
to fill the columns?

What I'm trying to do is move some financial files from originals in
csv, txt, prn, and xxml formats; I have a program that can move them
from these programs to my goal in QIF, but the original data isn't being
accepted in that program--it needs neatening up. Grateful for any and
all pointers.

FYI: I started from v. 5.38, and a few days ago found v. 7.07 at
http://shareware.pcmag.com/product.php%5Bid%5D91922%5Bcid%5D52%5BSiteID%5Dpcmag
and saw Google references to other sites as well. Columnizer is labeled
as freeware on the pcmag.com site.
