I don't know how other carriers handle it in the US but ours give the
unlock codes & procedures over the phone. It's one of the first things
I do after getting the shiny things home.

Hmmm. Our carrier's contract stipulates they can change our IMEI at
their "discretion." Dunno about the law ...
