It depends on the distribution. Some do not require
a hard disk at all. Several boot and run from CDs,
some even boot from floppies.

My recommendation is that you install all of the
hardware you expect to use _before_ you install
or run linux. Make certain all of the hardware
is supported. Make sure the hard drives can be
wiped completely and allow the installer to make
the decisions on how to best partition the drives
and set up the swap partition. Again, use Google
and read the f***ing manual before you begin.
Don't be afraid to try other variants, and consider
the *BSD distros too - they can run most linux apps.
