I think that's quite a bit more than a slight exaggeration.

In any case, this "fork" was not based on a tiny disagreement. In fact,
it wasn't based on any disagreement at all as far as I can see. The
Mozilla foundation decided to drop the Mozilla suite in lieu of devoting
their energies on the development of Firefox and Thunderbird. There were
those who didn't want to see Mozilla dropped and who volunteered to
continue developing it. However, due to copyright restrictions, they had
to rename it to Seamonkey.

From this page:

http://www.mozilla.org/projects/

the following:

"The SeaMonkey project is an effort to deliver production-quality
releases of code derived from the application formerly known as "Mozilla
Application Suite" and is the codename for the Mozilla browser."

The home page for Seamonkey:

http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/

says this:

"The SeaMonkey project is a community effort to deliver
production-quality releases of code derived from the application
formerly known as "Mozilla Application Suite". Whereas the main focus of
the Mozilla Foundation is on Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Thunderbird,
our group of dedicated volunteers works to ensure that you can have
"everything but the kitchen sink" — and have it stable enough for
corporate use."
