Cousin Gary ....
Finding search engine software will probably
not be a problem ....
For example, if you have a Debian-Based Linux distribution
the following package manager search will float up
a few alternatives ....
$ apt-cache search "search engine"
The one I found that would be most likely to be
already installed at the PWH site is called xapian
which has PHP bindings and searching the phpinfo
at the PWH site doesn't find it ....
http://pricelesswarehome.org/python/phpinfo.php
In the fall of 2005 when I did some experimental server-side
programming at the PWH site, Globat.Com which hosts PWH
seemed reluctant to install software at the user's request ....
For instance, they have Python installed
and they have MySQL installed but would not
install the Python-MySQL API that would allow
using MySQL from within Python programs ....
So I ended up coding in PHP instead of Python .... :-)
If we're lucky they have by now changed their tunes a bit
and might be amenable to adding user-requested software ....
Perhaps talking with them again about exploring
such possibilities could prove productive ....
In last night's dreams I saw a PWH site
that was hosted on a private dedicated server
that was not controlled by a hosting company ....
