Photo Filtration

de Richard Steinfeld 01/19/2007 01:30

I'm looking for an image correction program (or part of a program) that
will compensate for the discontinuous light spectrum of fluorescent
lamps.

I've been successful in illuminating still subjects for technical
documentation using compact fluorescent bulbs, except that unlike
incandescent bulbs, no matter what the claims have been for these
compacts, their light output has a jagged color curve similar to standard
fluorescent bulbs. The photos look weird and slightly sick -- not as bad
as the long tubes put out, but still, the photos are unacceptable. I've
not been able to adjust them properly using the normal controls in
IrfanView, which are typical of other image programs I've used.

Kodak used to make filters for fluorescents, the FLD and FLB, for
daylight- or tungsten-balanced films, respectively. These worked quite
nicely for most purpuses, and of course, like all other filters, were
manufactured by other companies as well. Kodak also used the reverse of
these compensations to fix color prints in their photo labs. I'd like the
equivalent of these filters, only within an image-editing program.

If this is solvable, we can use this method for cheap lighting for
general indoor digital photography.

Anyone know?
