I will step into dangerous ground here <grin> and state my often-wrong
opinion:
Folks who look for freeware, who come here for help (including myself) are
basically too poor to purchase software and are looking for a particular
solution to a problem.
From time to time, free web services offer a better solution to the problem
than downloaded software. Also, some freeware (consider OO) is so large
that downloading using dial-up is just not feasible.
If we want to be nit-picky about this, we can exclude free web services from
this list. But if we're truly interested in providing no-cost solutions to
people's real problems, then I don't think suggesting a free web service is
so off topic that it should get anyone upset.
Yes, I know the name of the newsgroup is "alt.comp.freeware," but I
personally look forward to *any* no-cost solution to anyone's problems. In
my opinion, it is this wide breadth of ideas that makes this ng so
worthwhile.
