Don't let a bad experience throw you off linux entirely.
Microsoft spends millions on usuability testing and no
open source project is going to be able to match that.
That doesn't mean all linux distros are equal - they
aren't.

You can run it off a bootable CD without messing
with your existing Windows setup.
I've tried a lot of linux and *BSD distros and
SimplyMEPIS is the only one that I've found that
has always worked, right out of the box.
