view, edit, create .doc-files

Don't like doc-files, and probably never will, but I am required to use
them anyway.
I'm looking for a decent program to handle the most recent doc-files,
other than OpenOffice and Abiword (tried them, don't like them, don't
want them).
For viewing doc-files I'm quite content with MS's Doc-viewer. An for
creating and editing simple doc-files I use wordpad which does the job.
I'm looking for something to create and/or edit doc-files that are up
to the most recent standard, whatever that is.
Can anyone inform me on the status of Cryptedit and Atlantis Nova, and
how they handle doc-files created with the latest MS Word ? IIRC both
of them had problems rendering 'newer' doc-files.
And is there something out there for my needs ?
