Some funny responses here so I'll be the straight man. Google for
"deskmates", "screenmates", or "desktop buddy."

You'll find characters that will do random stuff on your screen while you
are working. They don't usually interact with you.

One that I used to use was called Cyberbuddy.

You can load it with jokes, aphorisms, feel-good messages, etc that it can
re-gurgitate to you at random or regular intervals. It can also announce the
time, alarms, reminders, etc. It can also "phone home" for more jokes so you
get a fresh supply all the time.

It uses MS Agent, and if you look around you'll find interesting free Agent
characters so you can give it whatever face / voice you choose.

You could also Google for "chat bots" and "chatterbots"
