It's always been this way. In fact if anything, this sort of
information is more secure now than it was back in the "Wild West"
days when the local banker was the Sheriff's cousin and married to Dry
Good peddler's sister. The beast we call The Internet has just
streamlined the whole process, enabled bulk processing, and brought it
to the attention of the average Joe in a dramatic way.
This isn't a new phenomenon, a rich relative of mine was the victim of
identity theft 25+ years ago. And back then, you were just buggered. :(
