Probably started with email replies ? The original emailer would know
what he said in an earlier message to a known person.
However, with newsgroups, a post may contain parts of many individual
statements and veer off in many new directions.
Plus, there is often a time-lag in newsgroups when posts may be delayed
for some time on the many independent providers out there.
I think middle-posters should leave a blank line above and below thier
insertions to separate it from the surrounding quotes which it refers to.
