Quicktime to Windows Compatability

Hello, I'm a relatively new home user operating with Windows XP,home
edition. My problem is that when I transfer video clips from my NIKON
coolpics L1 to my PC, they transfer as Quicktime files and although I
can play them I can't incororate into any editing or filmaking software
as my Windows driven programmes won't recognise them.Can anyone suggest
a solution please,as I said at the beginning I'm a relatively new user
so plain language please.Thanks.
